At least 17 people are missing after a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea following warnings about rough seas, Egyptian officials said Monday. The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafy, said rescuers saved 28 people from the vessel south of the coastal town of Marsa Alam, and some were airlifted to receive medical treatment. The governorate received a report shortly before dawn Monday of a distress call made from the yacht, which had left Marsa Alam for a five-day journey.

Federal authorities have released an update on the investigation into fires at the BioLab chemical plant near Atlanta that produced a toxic chemical cloud and forced nearby residents to shelter in place. The fires broke out Sept. 29 at the BioLab plant in Conyers, sending a huge plume of orange and black smoke into the sky. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board on Friday released an investigation update.

BERLIN (Reuters) -Germany's ruling Social Democrats officially made Chancellor Olaf Scholz their lead candidate on Monday for February's election, billing him as a safe pair of hands compared with the opposition conservatives contender who has no government experience. Popular Defence Minister Boris Pistorius ruled himself out of the running last Thursday, putting an end to weeks of speculation over whether he should lead the SPD into the election instead of Scholz. The party executive committee of the centre-left SPD unanimously voted for Scholz as chancellor candidate, allowing him to run for a second term despite overseeing the collapse of his three-way coalition earlier this month.

Man arrested after shots fired ‘directly into car’ with children aged eight and two inside
An eight-year-old girl has been seriously hurt in a shooting in west London.The child and a man aged 34 were taken to hospital after they were shot in Southern Row, Ladbroke Grove, just after 5.30pm on Sunday, the Metropolitan Police said.Speaking near the scene of the shooting on Monday, Superintendent Owen Renowden revealed that a two-year-old child was also present in the car when the gunman opened fire, but the toddler was unhurt.The eight-year-old girl is in surgery, although her injuries are not life-threatening and she is in a stable condition.The 34-year-old man has suffered potentially life-changing injuries.Mr Renowden said that a 22-year-old has been arrested in relation to the incident and remains in custody.Witnesses can contact police on 101 giving the reference CAD5238/24NOV or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online to remain anonymous.
